Vintage beauty on a great location with great staff Jan 31, 2016
S35°32.105' E138°40.927' this YHA guesthouse in Encounter Bay on the Fleurieu peninsula was build as the Arcadia Guest House in 1914 for holiday seekers from Adelaide. Later, it was converted to a nursing home before becoming a youth hostel. The back of the house was recently extended to accommodate more guests and has a great back garden with BBQ and deckchairs and a small car park.

Room 4 in December 2015 for AUS$100 per night was a very simple twin room with polished floorboards in pastel colours. No en suite bathroom but shared down the hallway, two single beds and a fan. Room 4 is on the shadow site of the building. When we arrived it was outside 40° Celsius, but the room was still acceptable cool to sleep in. The thick sand stonewalls and high ceiling are keeping the room naturally cool. We still have much to learn from old practices, without jumping to energy consuming devices.

From the balcony on the first floor, we had sweeping views across the Port Elliot coastline. Horseshoe bay with the Flying Fish Café is 200 meters away. We had a great cooling down swim in the shallow Horseshoe Bay. The water was not that cold as elsewhere on the southern coast.

Forced to flee inside because of 40° Celsius outside temperature, we found the house very comfortable and relaxing. You could easily spend several hours daydreaming in the living or television room, with Steve’s perfect lounge music in the background. Do not forget the balcony. There was no free Wi-Fi reception available yet. The new internet devices were delivered but not yet installed. For AUS$5 you can buy 24 hours wireless access. Our hosts, Steve and Brigitte, were really helpful and friendly. We had a great time with them.

Port Elliot Beach House is a hostel. It is not luxurious but it has loads of style and history. Combined with the truly excellent location and great staff members, this vintage beauty is a much-recommended hostel.
