Pompeian Fastfood Pompeii Reviews
Mc POMPEIAN EATERIES Dec 31, 2010
Many inhabitants of Pompeii lived in confined spaces without cooking facilities and the archaelogists noticed that relatively few houses have kitchens and an unusual lack of tableware in the city,so eating out was a necessity but also the most important social activity in Pompeii.
To eat, drink and socialize, there was a great variety of places(89 thermopolii have been discovered) located around the forum, the bath houses, the amphitheatre, the commercial areas and along the main streets called thermopilii,cauponae(low-class inn),tabernae and popinae(lower class restaurant).
A thermopolium was most often a small shop serving ready-to-eat food and drink to passing trade on the streets. The premises consisted usually of a room opening into the street with a bar,a masonry counter sometimes covered with polychrome marble, often L-shaped,with sunk terracotta jars(dolia)used to keep the beverages and hot foods, brick shelves for the glasses and kitchenware and a cooker.
Some of the larger thermopolii sometimes nicely decorated ,featured courtyards, diningroom with couches(triclinium),even viridarium(enclosed garden) at the rear.
Many of these establishments served also as gambling places and brothel or place where customers could enjoy some pleasant time with the female bar staff...
The commonest drink was a warm and spiced(mulled)wine and the cheap food was quite healthy with just a little meat based on vegetables, cereals, cheese and fish(Pompeii was famous for its garum,a fish sauce),cakes and pies.
