Pollocks Toy Museum London Reviews
Get lost in your Childhood Aug 02, 2011
I was really looking forward to seeing this museum. I have a fondness for antique anythings and the idea of seeing well maintained vintage dolls and other childhood toys really appealed to me.
The museum wasn't easy to find but when I did finally locate it, steeping inside the small main doorway was like walking through a time machine. The museum is inside two houses joined together, and the small narrow staircases, the creaky wooden floors, and cracked red paint was reminiscent of the 18th century.
Every corner of the house is filed with a toy or game from years ago. Puzzles, rocking horses and doll houses were safely locked behind glass cases and cupboards. There is something pleasantly eerie about all those dolls looking back at you. I could just imagine what great joy these old toys must have brought some small child many years ago. Toys from all over the world and from different time periods are housed here.
There are many rooms and three floors. Here is how the house is sectioned off:
Staircase 1- Board Games
Room 1- Optical, mechanical and construction toys
Room 2- English tin toys; puppets
Room 3- Wax and composition dolls
Room 4 - Teddy bears, lead miniatures, doll’s houses
Staircase 2- Folk toys from Europe
Room 5- Dolls of china, wood, fabric, celluloid.
Tableau: 1900 girls’ nursery
Staircase 3- English dolls; folk toys from around the world
Room 6- Toy theatres.
Tableau: toy theatre workshop
And the Pollock’s Toyshop on the ground level
Admission was £6
