Polihale State Beach Park Kauai Reviews
Polihale Beach Jan 30, 2010
The last beach on the road, this is Kauai's westernmost point. It is an extension of Barking Sands Beach making it Hawaii's longest beach with 17 miles of sparking white sand! From the northern end of the beach, the beginning cliffs of the Na Pali can be seen, and they are absolutely beautiful. The last 6 miles of road bringing you here are an adventure in themselves. The road is dirt and mud with potholes in every direction. If renting a car be sure NOT to tell them you are coming here or they will not rent to you. Giving the rural location of this beach there are very few tourist's that make it out this very. When it is high season the beach is still so massive that you can always find a secluded place to camp here. Be careful not to camp too close to the water because large waves do appear out of nowhere sometimes
The sand dunes along this beach can reach up to 100-feet in height. The entire beach is unprotected from the ocean so surf and currents can be fierce here. On the northern end of the beach is Polihale State Park. One area on the 300-foot wide beach is safe for swimming and that is Queen's Pond, a small, encircled reef area. It is located on the south part of Polihale Beach going towards Barking Sands Beach.
Camping here is great and cheap. There is only one Ranger in Kauai and he very rarely makes it out to Polihale. Camp here for free and if the Ranger does show up you will need to pay a 5 dollar fee for a camping permit for the night.
Out here life is very easy going. You can see the island of Nihau from this beach and actually the sun sets right over it. Humpback whales are also a common sight. Bring your tent and your own amenities, there is no store out here with food or anything. There are restrooms, showers, picnic tables and drinking water.
This is by far one of my favorite beaches on the island because it is so secluded and tucked far away from the tourists.
