Day First and Last

We thought a road trip was a good idea. So it is 1000km from Riga, no big deal. On the way there we stopped for my birthday dinner in Wroclaw, Poland. We could feel the city was nice but we couldn't see anything because of heavy rain mixed with snow. We just walked on the main street of old town and headed to Prague. On the way back we were torn apart. Should we go to Czestochowa or back to Wroclaw? We picked Wroclav and we did not regret it. The weather was great, sunny and quiet, there…

August 15th is a holiday here and we have a three day weekend. It's a great chance to do some more exploring. This time we're going to head east to Lublin, Zamosc and into Ukraine to the city of L'viv.  We're sitting in a café close to the Malachowski Palace having a coffee (well, Ana is having a coffee - I'm having chocolate...) and enjoying a rest after driving for a few hours from Warsaw.    This is a small spa town, with some mineral springs that were discovered in the …

Poland:   I went into this trip totally relaxed and open to possibilities.  No anxiety or planning of any kind.  The plan is to get to Poland, met up with my friend Arturo and his parents, spent some time seeing Poland and then head south by some means with Artur towards Turkey.  My friend wants to see Turkey, but I am just going as far as time allows in two weeks.    7/20:  Last night I threw some things together for the trip.  Maybe I am a little…

After our sightseeing we returned to our friends' home for lunch - Sauerbraten!  which was really delicious, and knudeln, potatoes, green beans, carrots...  After lunch Jürgen and Magda took us to the train station.  The Berlin Hauptbahnhof is one of the newest train stations in Europe and is really spectacular.  Mostly made of glass and metal, it is a multileveled station with shopping and restaurants.  Our train back to Warsaw arrived just on time and we were on …

Krakow - The Land of King Krak!
posted by:

It was dark outside, and with the drizzle, the streets of Krakow didn’t look particularly inviting. We headed towards the Old Town, a place noted for its bars and restaurants. After only a hundred yards or so, Jodie stopped walking. “I don’t like this. I’m not getting good vibes.”    “What do you mean?” I said.    “Look!” gestured Jodie, water dripping from her hair. “Everything’s dark and dingy. It seems…unfriendly.” We wandered on. &…

My final day here I finally made it to the Krak Mound, which is basically a pile of dirt dating back to the 7th Century, the origin of which is unknown.  Legend is it that it is the burial site of Krakow's founder.  What it really is though is a great spot to overlook Krakow.  The walk down there was through the Jewish district, into parts I haven't yet explored, and then up the mound for a rest and a gaze of the city.  It is not a site that many venture to given the few d…

Weekend in Krakow
posted by:

Our trip to Krakow was my Christmas present from Joe, I chose Krakow because not only did it have some amazing sights to see but also, given the time of year we were going we were pretty much guarenteed snow...or so I thought! We set off from my house at about 6am feeling groggy but excited. We had packed everything we thought we would need for the freezing temperatures of Poland, themals and all, so our bag was pretty heavy. When we got on the plane I was sat next to a really nice Polish gu…

After arriving at the airport in Krakow we followed the instructions we were give and got on the bus that would take us to the train station.  We stood in the bus, crammed like sardines in a can, between hot and sweaty people for about 10 minutes waiting or the driver to arrive but he finally did and drove us the whole HALF A MILE to the train station!  As everyone got off the bus there was one thing on everyone’s mind, "if we ever come here again, we'll just walk that!"  Any…

As you know I was sitting at lunch the other day and just decided to go to Poland. What a great decision that was!! My friends and I went to Krakow and it was beautiful! Getting there was fun... We got to the train station, hoping that it was the correct one. We found our platform with a few minutes to spare. We were walking along the train, trying to find an empty car... WHEN THE TRAIN STARTED TO MOVE!!!! So, we all jumped onto a moving train! It was pretty awesome, I am not going to …
