The Museum honours Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916), the writer and essayist noted particularly for his historical novels written to "bolster Poles' spirits" during the partitions. His best-known works are the trilogy OGNIEM I MIECZEM / WITH FIRE AND SWORD, POTOP / THE DELUGE and PAN WOLODYJOWSKI, KRZYZACY / THE BLACK CRUSADERS, and QUO VADIS, set in Nero's Rome, for which Sienkiewicz received the Nobel Prize in 1905. The Museum is housed in a small, eclectic palace built in 1900-1902, w...

OK I had a great time in Bratislava, but I was off to Krakow...
I had heard countless accounts of Krakow being a beautiful city and people vouching for it telling me I HAVE TO see it so my expectations were pretty high and the city just didn't deliver for me :(
Checked out the Wawel Hill, Cathedral, the Old Town, don't get me wrong it is very nice, but to say it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe would be FALSE! It is nowhere near Prague, Vienna, Madrid, or Paris!!! Maybe i...

that is what my great grandmother told my uncle when she put 145 pictures in his school bag beside some clothes ..... She was drying the pictures before on the kitchen table because during that time the house was looted and the pictures got thrown out of the window into the dirt and my great grandmother picked them out the dirt. With tears in her eyes she was cleaning them.... they had only 10 minutes to leave their house in Strzeszow which is now located in Poland but at that time ...

It's official. I'm leaving for Japan, about to embark on the best adventure of my life so far, in 5 days and I'm getting paranoid. Okay, the weather was not very nice...okay, it was short notice...and okay, maybe it is a bit far...but why didn't anyone want to go with me to Karpacz that day?I really really felt like getting in touch with the mountain spirit, apparently only me...and so I went alone. Here I was all by myself in Karpacz, I got a place to sleep and went for a walk to the center, because there was supposed to be a concert there later that day. By the way, the weather really wasn't too nice. It was rainy...

So one day my friend decided she wants to buy a jacket. And since there are no cool shops in out hometown (obviously), she decided we should go to Toruń. It's only 40 min by bus away and I love the old part of the town, so i thought "What the heck?"After we arrived to the city we took a walk on one of the main streets - Chmielna - and head for the old market square. Having done a marathon through some of the shops and FINALLY picked the right jacket for Kasia (it's hard to suit her taste!) w...

If you don’t have anything better to do - visit Polish mountains in the autumn. :o) The colours and views are just picturesque. The atmosphere idyllic and restful.
But while in the mountains - remember! Don’t stand in a highlander’s way. In case if you consider yourself daring – don’t be surprised if you end up with a fork stabbed in your back! :o)) Yeah, of course, I’m exaggerating! Still, highlanders in Poland are as passionate and traditional as any other highlanders in...

Today was another travel day, but before we left
Krakow we did some more shopping in the Cloth Hall. We ate lunch at our favorite restaurant in the square, Pizza
Dominium. After lunch, we packed and
cleaned up our apartment. We turned in
our key and left for the airport via taxi.
The airport was chaotic with extremely long and unorganized lines, but
we actually made it thru all the lines and security without too much delay and
easily made our flight. We ar...

I was never able to find a couch to surf in Krakow. I think it was the poor timing of hitting a long holiday weekend, where most of the locals left town. This left me without a guide and wandering the streets of Krakow with the rest of the tourists. I do feel I missed out because of this, but what I did see of the city, I really liked. It's a great mix of insanely old architecture and very modern/ hip shops and people. The streets are littered with tourists and pigeons. It's such a top touris...

On Friday I got up and decided that it was a perfect day for a bike ride. I called my friend Agnes that I would visit her in the afternoon, packed my stuff and took off. I had 60 km ahead of me. I do not know how does it happen but sometimes when I go a longer distance on my bike the wind decides to blow in the opposite direction through out the whole way...no curve can change that, hm. Uh, but I made it. It is amazing... hehe you wander now what is so amazing, he;))). I will tell you.&n...

My original plan was to fly to Gdansk and travel by train around the whole country over the course of a month. I began my journey in high spirits as i landed at Lech Walensa airport 40 mins ahead of ourselves and it was snowing fairly heavy. Jumped into a cab driven by an elderly man whos command of the english language only extended as far as '' You want madam? Jiggy-Jiggy?''. Out of his glove box he produced a card for a local erotic bar. I laughed, slaped my lap and told hi...

I spent USA's national holiday in Poland this year. I crossed the boarder from LT to PL at about 1AM Lithuanian time, but midnight Polish time, and I crossed over to Slovakia not too long after midnight on the 5th.
First, the bus ride from Kaunas to Warsaw. On our approach to the Polish boarder, there was quite a bit of traffic (mainly semis), but that didn't bother our bus driver, he just passed them ... ALL of them, in one shot. No joke, on this two lane road there w...
