It would be difficult to characterize Poipu as a town… this is rather a charming collection of structures along Kauai’s southern shores. But the designation is significant, because it is a prime location during high season here (not so nice during Hawaii’s rainy season). Poipu is a relatively uncluttered destination that features great beaches and unfettered access to Waimea and Kauai’s beautiful western coast.
Poipu affords splendid beach opportunities – regardless of whether you desire a spot to surf or a place for your children to safely enjoy the ocean. It is also adjacent to several magnificent beaches that are more challenging if you are so inclined…a truly encompassing location! Nearby malls offer up quality dining opportunities and the environment is truly 100% vacation --- a great base camp to explore the garden Island of Hawaii!

This blog focuses on hiking Kalalau on the island of Kauai and cultural concerns for all of Hawaii --- if you are primarily interested in Kalalau you should proceed to the second entry and skip this potentially uncomfortable first entry. I think discovery is a relative term, because when Captain Cooke “discovered” Hawaii in 1778 it is estimated between four and eight hundred thousand natives inhabited this remote island chain. Although I’m pretty certain the Hawaiians already k...

One of the last (hopefully not ever) vacations the immediate family will take for some time was spent on the relaxing island of Kauai. The vacay was spent lounging, perusing the beaches on the island (I believe we went to at least 5) and trekking thru the rainforest. Highlight: hiking on the trail with breathtaking views of the Napali Coast while enhaling the smell of fresh guavas as they fell from trees during our adventure. Enjoy the photos!

Since I was the veteran driver in these environs, I got to drive our party of seven along the southern coast of Kauai to visit Waimea Canyon today. This is a jewel of the island and you will certainly hear how Mark Twain dubbed it the “Grand Canyon of Hawaii” from his visit in the 1800’s. Not a bad drive from Poipu and what appeals to me most is the glimpses of Ni’ihau, the “forbidden island”. This is another Hawaiian island that is privately owned and sti...
