Worth it for the ruins Mar 28, 2014
Located in the Vieux-Montreal area, the Pointe-a-Calliere, or the Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History, is a history museum that is definitely worth checking out.

There is “Yours Truly, Montreal”, a multimedia show where there is a light show on the ruins, and images projected on the screen on the sides and front. Runs every 30 minutes, and definitely a good way to start your visit.

After that, it is the archaeological ruins themselves, located at the bottom floor, which you can walk through, as you see where Montreal was born. There is also the archaeological crypt, where you can see the different models of the city over the years, as it grew from a small village to a major city, as well as more artifacts and display on what Market Day was like back then. You have the option to join a guided tour of the ruins, to help explain the ruins better, but I did not join one.

Then comes “Pirates or Privateers”, which is basically a replica of a pirates ship and how it was like, living like one. Not much is shared on how it relates to the history of Montreal. While the kids may like it, I thought it was disappointing, and unless you have an interest in pirates, it’s not really worth the time.

And there are the temporary exhibitions, with “The Beatles in Montreal” having 2 parts on 2 different floors, when I was there. Worth checking out if you are in town when it is going on, and obviously, must-see for Beatles fans.

There are lockers to store your belongings, however it will cost you $1. You won’t get that coin back when coming back for your things.

Overall, the museum is nice place to check out, and the ruins and presentation alone, make it worth visiting. Definitely give it around 2 hours, for the ruins and whatever temporary exhibition is on display.
