The Park at The Point Jul 08, 2017
Point State Park is located at the Forks of the Ohio, the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, forming the Ohio River. The Ohio River flows from this point west to the Mississippi River.

At the point of confluence is the Point State Park Fountain. Flanking the fountain are river promenades along the Allegheny and the Monongahela. There is also the Great Lawn and green spaces planted with native flora. (Each plant species is identified.)

Historically the park was the site of the French Fort Duquesne (1754) and the British Fort Pitt (1758). The capture of Fort Duquesne touched off the French and Indian War and the contest for French vs. British control of the Ohio Valley and Canada. George Washington was here early n his military career. The outline of Fort Duquesne and the outline of Fort Pitt are traced in stone blocks across the Great Lawn. The Fort Pitt Blockhouse is an original 1764 remnant of the British fort. A reconstruction of the Monongahela Bastion houses the Fort Pitt Museum. Both the blockhouse and museum are open to visit until 5:00 p.m.

Point State Park is a beautiful place to walk and enjoy the fountain and take in the riverside scene.

Point State Park is easily reached from the Pittsburgh central business district. There is a commercial parking lot ($7) and limited street parking. Gateway is the nearest Light Rail station. The park itself is free of charge.

Both the Forks of the Ohio and the Fort Pitt Blockhouse are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
