Point Lobos State Reserve

Carmel, California

Point Lobos is one of my favorite spots to be and see amazing beauty walking the trails of the reserve. I have taken groups of students there, as well as small groups of adults. It doesn't take much arm-twisting to get me to go, either to lead a nature walk or just to hang out for the day. I love sharing the place. For those who are into kayaking, snorkeling, or diving (beware, the water is cold!); Point Lobos offers one of the richest marine environments in all of California. For those who are casual hikers and nature lovers, the views from the granite cliffs looking down into the kelp forests are awesome. You also get views of Pebble Beach from there. It is not uncommon to see moon jellies, dolphin, porpoise, harbor seals, sea lions, and sea otters. The soil on the bluffs overlooking the sea is blackened from generations of Native American campfires, and sparkles with the debris of abalone shells. The Reserve is partially forested with Monterey Pine and Monterey Cypress. This is a great place to view bird life. Point Lobos has a rich history. It has been host to Native Americans, Chinese fishermen, Portuguese whalers, Japanese abalone divers, and a long list of other enterprising groups. It has been a location for a number of movie shoots over the years. To drive into the reserve there is the standard California State Park vehicle entrance fee, but there is also some turnout parking along highway 1 next to the reserve. Point Lobos is not available for overnight camping. I would post pictures, but there are already so many available on the internet. If you're passing through the Monterey Bay area, this is a great place to stop and reconnect with nature. A must see!
