The architect of Pohick Church was James Wren, who was also responsible for Christ Church in Alexandria and the Falls Church. Very similar in design, Christ Church has the additional features of balcony seating and a clock tower which probably reflected Alexandria's wealth as a port town compared to the more secluded Pohick Church. The graveyard contains many graves that were moved to the property to make way for development in Northern Virginia. Look for tombstones of the Alexander family, whom Alexandria was named after, as well as the oldest marked grave in the county from the 1690s just in front of the church. Mathew Brady, the Civil War photographer, took some interior photos of Pohick during the war when Union soldiers used it for stables.

In the 1950s a descendant of George Mason began constructing a massive underground mausoleum on church land. It was never completed and is now buried over in the woods. Apparently it was a popular party spot for teenagers before the church shut it down, another aspect of its fascinating history.

Often called "Washington's Church," Pohick Church is one of the oldest church congregations in Northern Virginia, dating to 1689. The present church building was completed in 1774. Pohick has seen a lot of history. George Washington and George Mason worshipped here and were members of the Vestry. Parson Weems, who recounted the story of George Washington and the cherry tree, was a rector at Pohick in the early 19th Century. Bullet holes, sabre cuts, and graffitti from the Civil War era, when Union troops camped on the grounds, can readily be seen on the exterior walls.

The interior still follows the colonial design of pew boxes, originally designed to accommodate families, rather than modern rows of pews.

Pohick is an active Episcopal Church parish today. Area residents look forward to the annual Christmas Mart church bazaar and open house held in November. As part of Christmas Mart, the ladies of the church don Colonial costumes to serve a lunch of turkey salad and pumpkin pie to visitors.
