Podstrana Overview

Podstrana is a beach town that is mainly visited by tourists from Croatia and other Eastern European countries. This probably means that the Western European Travel agencies haven’t included Podstrana hotels in their service. This gives Podstrana its very own atmosphere.
It’s located 35 km south of Split. A motorway that connects Split and other beach resorts to the South of Croatia runs right through Podstrana. This is the reason why Podstrana is rather a stretched-out town rather than a town with a centre.
Actually there are two parts of Podstrana: the part for the tourists at the beach and the other part on the hill where the locals live.
There are many restaurants and hotels of all sorts. The hotels vary from highly luxurious to simple pensions and everything in between.
The beach is long but not very broad. This has the advantage that you don’t have to walk far from your hotel to the water. The water is great, not too cold, not too warm and pretty clear. Clear enough to go snorkling. The big hotel at the harbour has a diving centre. The harbour is filled with luxurious yachts; yacht owners stop off at Podstrana for a refill of groceries or to eat at one of the restaurants.
The entertainment facilities on the water are more for elderly kids, rather than for small children.
There is a good bus service that runs up to Split and down south.
If you are looking for a quiet holiday at a Croatian beach and want to stay close to Split: Podstrana is the place to go.
