Tea culture in tegal "Poci Tea" Jun 09, 2013
Tea culture is defined by the way tea is made and consumed. How the people interact with tea, and the aesthetics about tea drinking, it includes of tea production, tea brewing, tea presentation, tea ceremony, society, history , ethics, and communication. Tea culture and drinking customs vary in each region of Indonesia. Every region has the different variant flavor of tea as black, green, and use different flavorings, such as milk, sugar or herbs. In West Java they drink tea without sugar and in the central and east of Java they drink tea with sugar.

On the way from Yogyakarta to Jakarta, we enjoyed an afternoon in Tegal, Central of Java to drinking of Poci Tea. Tegal people very proud to serve their guests with Poci Tea drink. Drinking Poci Tea has become a tradition in Tegal, is due to the growth of the tea factories in Tegal in 1930-an who evoked tea culture tradition. As city of tea this city has a lot of tea plantations and tea factories. So many billboards advertising tea products are in sight at almost every corner of the city. In Tegal almost every restaurant serves Poci Tea as a welcome drink.

Poci Tea brewed pot of tea in the pot (small pot) of clay and coupled with rock sugar and hot drink. Traditional Poci Tea produces the tea leaves and jasmines in the manual way. They use the tea made from a mixed composition of the rough tea powder and jasmines in a unique earthenware pot ( called poci) . The teapot makes a good scent of tea and tea taste more delicious. Poci tea became special when served with the hot water in a teapot (Poci ). Poci Tea is served with rock sugar. So that when served with tea in hot water, the teapot will be reacted with the tea and cause the characteristic odor. The teapot (Poci ) makes steaming hot tea detained in earthenware pot make the tea smell will not be damaged.

The teapot (poci) very unique in its use. The teapot (poci) should be filled with hot water and tea for 7 days before we use for tea . We should change the water and tea every day in 7 days . So that the smell of teapot (poci) can be removed with a tea fragrance, tea become fresh when we were drinking of tea.

Tegal residents have a special term for Poci tea called "Wastigel " is mean fragrant, hot, bitter, sweet and viscous is mean hot tea, sweet, jasmine fragrant and colored viscous black . The custom of drinking tea in Tegal city called “Moci”. They do "Moci" on the afternoon or evening while eating some meals in angkringan or restaurant . Angkringan also known as an egalitarian place for varied buyers who come without distinction of social class. They enjoy the Poci Tea and food chatting late into the night talking about various things and mostly only men do "Moci". Moci identical with relaxation

A unique way how to enjoy the Poci Tea, first, the tea comes with the boiling water in the small teapot. Then, they pour it into the small cup of tea that's already filled with a large piece of rock sugar. We no need to stir the tea, and the special sweet taste comes when we drink up almost all the tea . We should continue pouring the tea into the cup.

But regardless of the myth of Poci Tea things that make me never forget the taste and smell of this tea. The unique tea presentation and is supported by a beautiful landscape around this city. This is an unforgettable experience enjoying Poci tea in his city. And always make me smiles if listening the Javanese song about Pot Tea. The lyrics are "Tea in a teapot, sir... sweet from stone sugar, sold by a beautiful lady. If you drink this tea, you fell enchanted"
