One of our favorite sites in the Western Mediterranean area May 02, 2012
Pinara was an important city in ancient Lycia. Now the ruins are not as impressive as many other sites, but what makes this site so impressive is the location and gorgeous backdrop along with the sheer cliff with rock tombs honeycombed in it. The site has views of snow capped mountains. When we were there in the spring, there were flowers in bloom of every color all over the place. We originally went here in the late afternoon one day for about 1 to 1.5 hrs ( was free at that time) and we enjoyed it so much, we came back the next day (paid 5TL) and spent a few hours more here including a picnic lunch sitting on the ancient theatre enjoying the views and watching the goats make their way to the pasture below us. It was an incredible and surreal experience. There are some beautiful hikes in here with even a little creek.
The most incredible thing about this site is that it's one of the least visited sites in the area, and yet it was our favorite site we visited. You will pretty much have the entire place to yourself and the tranquility and serenity and scenery makes this stop a MUST SEE in my opinion!
We really didn't have any difficulty finding the site at all, and had no problems with the signage. The road to Pinara once off the main road is a bit rough-ish though.
