Plantas y Blanco Nov 27, 2011
I finally made it to the Banos, small, kind-of touristy/popular town and the center of the best cane cookies manufacturing in whole Ecuador. It took me couple of buses and most of the day of traveling to come from Quito to this small outpost on the cliff top. Whole fairly flat clearing on the top of the canyon is spotted with houses and many small rivers break dense tree line and make beautiful waterfalls all over the place. Main river dug deep and narrow canyon which is incredibly scenic, excellent for kayaking and rafting. Road to the city is more than picturesque, moving along curvy river, and drivers are making sure that your experience is one of not looking outside while they fly over sharp angles trying to overtake competition on the road.

Plantas y Blanco Hostel is one block from the main square in the area full of tourist and outdoor agencies that offer rafting, climbing, biking… tons of adventure for everyone. White building has three stores of apartments and large roof balcony that is perfect for sun bathing and relaxing. Also on the roof, sizable enclosed space is kitchen and dining area. I believe that I got one of the worst rooms in the hostel, on the bottom floor facing the street, but nevertheless room was perfectly clean, tidy and even smelled nice. First floor rooms have shared bathrooms and showers, and they are perfectly fine, have hot water, and only issue is that shower rooms are very small. Internet can be accessed in the most areas of the hostel, it is free and good. In the morning, very good breakfast is served on the roof, and coffee is more than great.

In the city and surrounding area there are many attractions and things to do. Everything is geared towards the active people (hiking, rafting, climbing…) but there is also few hot baths that are very enjoyable. Many locals are constantly visiting those baths, and there was always lots of people, no matter how early I get there (and I went there at 6am…)

Volcano Tungurahua towers over the town, and at the time when I was there volcano was erupting ash. I really wanted to see lava and eruption, but huge cloud of ash prohibited any visual enjoyment… Despite volcano, city is on the very safe place, away from lava flows, and protected from any major eruption. Only issue is if you have to run away… and there is only one way out.

Sugar cane cookies are “the thing” in this town, and every block has at least one shop that makes colorful chewy sweets. I explored the town’s surrounding, but I could not find any sugar cane fields… It must be one of the traditions that are brought from away, such as salty cod fish traditional meals in Puerto Rico... Anyway, it is really fascinating to see guys stretching and cutting the sweet in the front of every shop. Number of very good cafes and restaurants serve very good food and also great variety of meet, traditional dishes and variety of international cuisine.

Beautiful place, recommended hostel.

Socialable Hostel In Banos Jun 08, 2010
I ended up staying here for about a week because I broke my foot on a rafting trip! Great hostel for meeting people, but can get a bit loud at times as everyone congregates on the roof in the evenings. The breakfasts are good, but a little expensive. You have a great view from the roof and the hostel is very comfortable. Worth staying for the sociable atmosphere especially as a solo backpacker!

Great value, great location, great food Jul 17, 2009
The most popular hostel in Banos and it is no wonder why. I have stayed here twice (once in a private and once in the dorms) and both times were excellent experiences. A bit loud at night, but besides that pretty friendly, clean (sheets changed every three days), shared bathrooms are not THE cleanest but acceptable. Great breakfasts for a good price (homemade bread) and the upstairs restaurant is open until 10pm for lounging, admiring the waterfall across town, with honor system beer and water for sale. Free internet with a sign up list available. Right in the center of the tourist area with rafting, horse riding, hiking, caving, tours, quads, dune buggies, etc. available within the surrounding blocks. Close to restaurants and gift shops. Just a couple of blocks away from the hot baths as well. All around a great place with friendly staff and night time security. Great place to meet people of all ages.

Plantas y Blanco Mar 27, 2008
Plantas y Blanco was, by far, one of the nicest ho0stels that I have ever stayed in. Like any good establishment, it was clean and secure. As an added bonus, it had the best shower in all of Ecuador. I have been here for two months and have, on occasion, yearned for a shower with good water pressure and a consistent temperature other than scalding or freezing. Plantas y Blanco was my plumbing savior. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
