Planning a night on the town in Perth... May 22, 2011
Perth is very much an outdoors type of city. Because of Perth's temperate climate, and peoples laid back attitude, alot of Pubs and restaurants in Perth have Alfresco areas or Beer Gardens. It is very common even in winter time and night time to see people enjoying their meals or drinking in outdoors areas of pubs and restaurants.
The Sunday Session
The Sunday "Sesh" as it is known in WA, was a tradition started back in the 1960s. In Perth it was illegal to open a pub on a Sunday, so people used to jump in their car with all their mates and head out to the country towns for the afternoon drinking sessions...hence the Sunday Session was born... These days the pub opening times are much more relaxed but the tradition of the Sunday session lives on in the metropolitan Perth pubs...
Drinking in Perth can seem an expensive thing to do to some visitors as Perth drink prices are very high...Even compared to the Eastern States. When you throw in the cost of drinks, possible cover charges for clubs, Taxi's, cigarettes (If that's your thing) it can turn into a very expensive night out.
Public transport is few and far between on a Friday and Saturday night. So Taxis are the way to go in terms of convenience. But if you can get public transport, then you will save yourself quite a few dollars.(Check out www.transperth.wa.gov.au) At the end of the night... Taxi is your only option of getting home.
Northbridge is the main district in the central Perth area for nightlife. Although the area has got a negative reputation for alcohol fuelled violence on Friday and Saturday nights, alot of the time it is a storm in a Tea-cup and is no different to any other night club district in any other major city of the world. Use your common sense and you'll be fine..
When going to Pubs/Clubs in Perth at night-time. You will be asked to show ID, and some places will even scan it. The reason for this is, if there is an incident, they match your ID photo with the CCTV footage and the person can be made responsible. Its a way of keeping people safe in night-clubs.
The 3 legal forms of ID in WA are -
-Australian Drivers licence
-Proof of Age Card*
You may be declined from entering Pubs and Clubs without valid ID (No matter what your age is)
*This is the best one to get if you do not want to carry your passport everywhere. (Check out http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/21276.asp)
Dress smart when you go out...
Pubs tend to be smart casual dress while your night-clubs are generally smart dress (EG Collared shirt for men, Formal Shoes)
Perth has some great pubs and clubs and you'll meet some great people in them! Do some research and find your faves...
