Plains Art Museum Fargo Reviews
Love this Museum! Jan 29, 2008
If you should find yourself spending any amount of time in Fargo, ND then you definitely need to visit the Plains Art Museum.
The museum is a stunning three level renovated warehouse located in downtown Fargo. When first entering the building you are instantly greeted with a large friendly open space and very helpful museum assistant at the front desk who will answer any questions regarding the exhibits, children programs and other planned art events. To your left is a lovely little gift shop with a few books and some locally made jewelry, pottery and other artsy gifts. To your right is a small and inviting cafe. A great place to order a cup of tea and engage in conversations with other museum patrons about the exhibits or the loveliness of the day.
There were some photographs located in the hallways on the first floor showing the timeline of the renovations, but the main art galleries are located in the two upper levels of the building. The Plains Art Museum houses an extensive permanent collection on the second floor of mostly regional artists, including contemporary Native American art, along with a few pieces from more nationally recognized artists, such as Andy Warhol. I was beside myself with glee!! There were sculpture, prints, paintings, drawings and mix media work.. The diversity of art and artists in the second floor gallery will awaken your senses and make you salivate for more!! What luck there are art work (mostly from local art students) in the hallways and a whole other floor to visit!!
The third floor is where the visiting exhibit is held. When I first visited there was a fantastic exhibit of Wayne Gudmundson black and white photography of midwestern landscapes (mostly of the Plains). At this particular moment there is an vibrant print exhibit on display that I am in the mist of making plans to see.
The museum, in my opinion, does a wonderful job of showing the diversity of midwestern artists, supporting local university art students and involving the Fargo Moorehead community through various art events and children programs. well worth a detoured visit!
$5 for adults, $4 for students with ID and free for children.
