Places to see in Harrogate N. Yorkshire Reviews
Feb 17, 2008
I lived in Harrogate for almost a year and found it one of the best kept secrets of the UK. It is an old spa town where the English would travel to so that they could soak in the sulfur spas. These spas are still in operation. There are numerous pubs, restaurants, and other items of interest in and around Harrogate. I loved as I used could take the train to just about any place in the UK. For the other rural places like Pately Bridge there was the bus.
Here's a small blurb on Betty's Tea rooms...Bettys Tea Rooms are regionally renowned tea rooms. They are owned by Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate - the same company that makes the more nationally well-known Yorkshire Tea. Bettys also has cafés in York, Ilkley, and North Allerton, and has recently (2005) opened a second one in Harrogate at the Harlow Carr Gardens. It famously has over fifty tea pots located around the tea rooms. See the pix that I've posted of the Stray area with flowers just down the street from Bettys Pix around Harrogate can be found at: http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/North_Yorkshire/Harrogate/ Harrogate is located in North Yorkshire of which the largest city is York. To the north and east of the ancient walled City of York the North York Moors cover a broad area stretching from the Vale of York and the Vale of Mowbray across to the Yorkshire Coast. A large part of this area has been designated as one of England's national parks. Popular destinations in and around the North York Moors include Helmsley, Pickering, Ryedale, Rosedale, Rievaulx Abbey, Mount Grace Priory, Hutton-le-Hole, Thornton-le-Dale and Goathland (famous as the location for the filming of the popular TV series "Heartbeat"). For those how desire to hike there are numerous paths in and around Harrogate. There are atleast 2 bookstore in town that carry hiking and trail maps. Interested in long distance trekking... Several long distance footpaths cross the moors, including Wainwright's celebrated Coast to Coast route, the Cleveland Way, and the Lyke Wake Walk. To the west of North York Moors themselves is the Vale of York and the Vale of Mowbray (spectacularly overlooked by the white cliffs of Sutton Bank) and the market towns of Boroughbridge, Northallerton and Thirsk (the latter being famous for its associations with the English country vet James Herriott, whose practice also took in the Yorkshire Dales - Yorkshire's other great national park). Running along the western and northern edges of the North York Moors are the Hambleton Hills and the Cleveland Hills respectively, while to the east is the Yorkshire Coast, and the popular seaside resorts of Whitby, Scarborough and Filey. To the south of the North York Moors lies the Vale of Pickering, and the gentler hills and valleys of the Yorkshire Wolds.
Here;s a shot of the spring croc…
