Placerville Vacation Guide

Placerville is the county seat of El Dorado County, incorporated in 1854, ironic given there is neighboring Placer County. Placerville's history dates back to the Gold Rush era and is historically known as "Hangtown", due to the numerous hangings that had taken place in the region.

A walk down Main Street reveals many historical markers, some of which signify spots of certain events or persons importance. In addition, Placerville was on the line of the historical Pony Express.

One historic landmark that still remains on Main Street is the Bell Tower, a monument to the city's volunteer firemen. It was placed in the tower in 1865, used as an alarm system to call out the firefighters.

Today, Placerville finds itself centrally situated for various local activities and destinations. There are wineries, the Apple Hill Ranches, the American River, historic Coloma, and the El Dorado National Forest all within minutes of the downtown region.

It always amazes, to think of all the adventures that lie out there, somewhere, waiting to be discovered. It seems that every trip I take fails to shorten, only lengthening the list of places I need or want to see. The more I travel, the more I realize this list, actually, has nothing to do with it...
