Piz Gloria Mar 07, 2013
The Piz Gloria is better known as Blofeld’s lair in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, one of the Bond Movies from the 1960s – it’s the one he skis down from in the big action sequence. Of course, in real life, it is not an evil supervillain’s hide-out. It is cooler than that. It’s a revolving restaurant at 3000 odd meters above sea level, with a viewing terrace and a black run down.

For those of us who could no more consider skiing down a black run than we could consider borrowing an invisible car and blowing up a satellite, there is a perfectly serviceable cable car up and down to the summit. This is included in your ski pass, but would definitely add to the prices for the restaurant for anyone who isn’t into strapping two sticks to their feet and hurtling down a hill. It’s well worth the trip, however. The restaurant itself is the most 1960s place imaginable; the restaurant tables rotate slowly around a central kitchen, allowing you to gawk at the whole panorama as you eat, and the décor is all melamine shelves with mineral samples on them and photos of James Bond. The food, on the other hand, is standard ski cabin food, at prices that are average for the area (so high by European standards but not too insane). You’ll pay roughly 15 Swiss francs for a main course, and it will probably involve either rosti or spatzli. The food was very nice, as was the wine. Service was fine, within the limits of knowing who you are meant to wave at when your waiter is now 180 degrees away near the Eiger, and you are now looking down at the Swiss plain.

The views are absolutely spectacular. Even if you aren’t eating, and are still working out blue runs, it’s worth coming up in the cable car to see the mountains. If you aren’t eating in the restaurant there’s a large viewing terrace so you can just have a look from there. There’s also a gift shop, and a film presentation about the region, but I didn’t go to either.

Revolving restaurant on the top of Schilthorn Jan 28, 2013
On the top of Schilthorn (near Mürren village in the Bernese Oberland, 16,5 km from Interlaken)at 2,970 meters is panoramic revolving restaurant, named Piz Gloria, at the summit, which is where the James Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service was set. A famous black ski run featured in the film starts at the summit and leads down to the Engetal below Birg (I made too). ;) The restaurant revolves a full 360 degrees in 55 minutes. Expensive and I didn't it there, but coffee was delicious. The view from restaurant is outstanding. I highly recommend to visit. Simply take a coffee/tea and enjoy the view!
