The Lincoln County Courthouse in Pioche, Nevada was originally built in 1871 and pre-estimated to cost $16,400.00 to handle the needs of this wild and lawless town. But over the years, broken contracts, over inflated material costs, and interest on bond payments made the price of this structure soar to a Million Dollars. It was finally paid off in 1937 just as the new Courthouse was being built. Pioche, pronounced pee-oach, is about 175 miles northeast of Las Vegas and was originally a mining town begun in the late 1860s. Reportedly one of the toughest mining towns in the old west, they actually hired gunmen to fight mining claim encroachments. In fact their cemetery had 75 graves filled before anyone was buried of a natural death. The old courthouse still stands on the side of the hill overlooking what is left of the old town. We drove through town, but never did notice the new courthouse.
