Nightlife for cheap in San Juan, PR! Sep 08, 2008
Pinones is a typical strip of food stands along the coast just east of San Juan, an area where the locals go to get cheap eats & beer & enjoy the ocean breeze & view San Juan's skyline at night.. you can either take the public bus C45 to go there or better yet take a rental car instead bcoz public transportation in San Juan is very unreliable -- whilst it will take you only 10 mins more or less to reach Pinones by car from Isla Verde Ave., it will take you more than an hour to get there by bus bcoz of the waiting period..
i suggest going there at night bcoz the food is freshly prepared for the nights & the unsold food is heated up by day bcoz Pinones is a night spot where mostly the locals go to unwind after work & enjoy a few beers or take their dates to (very dark by the shore).. when we went there by day with Francisco, a TB local, the prices he paid for food were lower than what we paid for when we came back the next day without him lolz ( maybe they have different prices for tourist)but i guess that goes with other tourist places too.. the place is so different at night bcoz i saw a kind of local band playing & dancing & the place was packed with cars everywhere ( we rented a car & went there at night ).. we didn't stay but just ordered food & fruit shakes to go bcoz the kids didn't like their legs being bitten by mosquitoes or some kind of bug.. oh yes, & during the day you will see a horde of stray black dogs roaming around the place just like in other places in San Juan.. & further down the road where the food stands are farther apart, you will find places to park your car & find your own solitary part of a beach to picnic & swim & even try fishing too ( i saw some people catch fish ).. there were places where the surf was quite high & some kids were surfing. |

i wanted to see Pinones, a short strip of road dotted by food stalls serving PR food & bounded by the ocean on the other side where the locals congregate mostly at night to enjoy the food & drink beer or pina colada.. Frankie says it is also… an exclusive meet-up.. |

the dining seats & tables ( made of heavy iron) were clean & better than those in Pinones where the tables & chairs were of cheap plastic.. there were many small stands of all kinds of food including oven crisped pig hocks (lechon), bacalao cooked in vinegar with onions, tomatoes, chili peppers, & slices of avocado, large whole fish escabeche, beefsteak… an exclusive meet-up.. |
