Pinnawala Overview

Located in turn off from just past Kegalle along the Colombo - Kandy main road ( 85 kms from colombo) , travelers head to Pinnawala for one reason and one reason alone : Elephants. Pinnawala houses the largest elephant orphanage in the country. Where Elephants who are left with our parental support are adopted taken care of and if possible released to the wild or given to safe custody of caretakers . The orphanage also takes care of elephants who are unable to fend for themselves. Among the elephants at pinnawala are victims of land mines, elephants with poor eye sight and elephants who cannot survive in the wild.

The pinnawala elephant orphanage is located in close proximity to a river to which elephants are taken twice a day to bathe. This is a high tourist attraction as hotels have been built around the area for visitors to enjoy this activity. Among other activities for visitors are the opportunity to feed milk to the young elephants and elephant rides are provided along the river by other private operators in the area. The pinnawala area itself is a very small town primarily concentrating on providing supplies to the tourists/ visitors to the Pinnawala Orphanage. The travel time from colombo is generally about 2 to 2.30hrs depending on the road traffic conditions.

It can be reached from both Kegalle as well as from the Colombo Kurunegala main road.
