Nice place to check out Nov 24, 2014
Featured in the 16th season of “The Amazing Race” and 4th season of “The Amazing Race Asia”, the Pinang Peranakan Mansion is a typical home of the wealthy Peranakan people.

So who are the Peranakan? They are the descendants of the Chinese immigrants that moved to present-day Malaysia, dating back to the 15th to 17th century. Also called the Baba-Nyonya or Straits Chinese, they settled and adopted the local Malay culture, while still retaining their Chinese culture. I believe those 3 words are used interchangeably, though I forgotten how any of those words were pronounced.

Finding it is very tricky, and honestly, I am not sure how to give directions on here. Definitely get a good map, and figure it out from there. There are signs throughout the city, that may point the way. It is a green mansion on the side.

Inside the mansion, are the recreations of the different rooms with period furniture and collection of antiques, normally found in a Peranakan home. There are so many of them, it’s really unbelievable and appealing to see. Attached to the mansion, are the Straits Chinese Jewelry Museum and the Ancestral Hall, both are worth a look and included in the admission.

You have a choice of seeing the place with a guide or not, which is included in the admission. Probably a better option, if you want to learn more about the place, as there are no written descriptions in the mansion. Just a map of the place you pick up at the entrance, which just tells you the name of the rooms.

Either way, you can't wrong! The mansion is definitely worth checking out, as I find the rooms and the art throughout the place, very nice to look at. And getting a feel and culture of a group that has been living in Penang for generations.

Photography is allowed, even if the web site says that it is not allowed in the mansion. And good thing, because you may get carried away by snapping a bunch of photos of the rooms.

Jenny, I now know which mansion you are referring to, as I have only heard about it as Cheong Fatt Tse Mansion. I just did not have enough time for it, as I was only there for 2 days.

I will have to read about the Heritage Trail, when I get the chance.

Glad you liked the food there. Penang is popular for its food.
Oh, it's called the Cheong Fatt Tse Mansion, but because the whole thing is blue, it's also referred to as the blue mansion.
I did the heritage trail and covered some interesting places.
