Pike's Peak - Manitou & Pike's Peak Cog Railway Aug 24, 2008
WOW! What fantastic trip today to Manitou Springs and up to the top of Pike's Peak via the Manitou and Pike's Peak Cog Railway! So far, Colorado has proven itself as a destination to come back to one event after another.

Pikes Peak is named for Zebulon Pike, an early explorer of the southweatern United States. We began our trip at the rail station in Manitou Springs about 20 minutes from the heart of C. Springs. We had arrived early, mainly because I was bored after breakfast at the hotel and wanted to walk around and take some pics.

The trip up to the top takes about an hour and a half, so be sure to dedicate at least 4 hours to complete this adventure. Once our trip started, the guide provided lots of pointers on what to look out for on the way to the top. Recommendations: TRY to get a seat facing forward (or up) on the '2 seat' side, and trade with someone with a seat facing down the mountain on the '3 seat' side. Our seats were really on the opposide of the optimum views, but we were still able to see everything just fine. Facing forward on the climb up is the most important, IMO. Drink lots of water to account for the fact that you're going to lose about a pint to a quart of water due to hypoxia (lack of oxygen) at the summit of 15,000 feet above sea level. And bring a coat! Today the temperature was about 41 degrees farenheit (5 degrees Centigrade). It had started to snow a little while we were at the top and on the way down while allowing another train to pass, the conductor mentioned that visibility had dropped severely and they were expecting a relatively heavy snow for this time of year.

It snowed when I was there in July too. My Florida grandsons who had never seen snow were thrilled. Nice photos.

Tourist Attraction to see in Colorado Springs/Manitou Springs, CO Sep 10, 2001
The train ride was crowded, and you have to bring your own food. There is no food served on the train ride. You can purchase it at the Railway station ahead of time. Have lots of gum to chew to prepare for the ear popping ride you will have. The elevation gets rather high!!!

The train ride is well worth it once you get to the top and look around and take photos. I recommend this for everyone heading thru Colorado Springs
