Only swim if you know how to swim! Aug 10, 2011
Piha Beach is known around NZ for being a beach that has strong currents and rips, and often very very big waves. It's patrolled by lifeguards during summer, who put out red and yellow flags that you MUST swim between. They put these flags out to mark the safe areas with no rip tides (tides that sweep you out to sea). It's a great beach for surfing (surf on the OUTSIDE of the flag area), nice place to go and have a picnic or eat from the fast food store on the other side of the carpark. The carpark is free and no time limit.

The sand isn't as white and fluffy as a lot of other beaches around NZ (like the Coromandel) so it's not the prettiest of beaches, however it still is a good time and fun to swim in as long as you stay shallow.

There is a popular TV programme called Piha Rescue which features the lifeguards of this beach rescuing people who get into trouble here. It is that much of a problem, a lot of people go swimming without knowing HOW to swim. This might be ok in calm beaches but just know that Piha waves have some attitude! Don't let it put you off though, as long as you know and are aware, you'll have a good time.

Diverse Beach Mar 16, 2008
Cool beach, and I went on a rainy day. Theres a HUGE mountain/rock sticking up out of the beach you can hike up, which gives you some decent views. Thats what I think Piha is most known for. The beach also offers good beginners surfing, huge beach area with nice sand, and a cool area to the south with interesting cliffs and rock formations. Wish I had more time to explore it but a very nice beach. Actually I was there exactly one year ago today on St Pattys day, weird.
