Pigeon Island Reviews
Good half-day site sightseeing trip to add to your agenda Aug 06, 2010
From our hotel on Reduit Beach, we look directly across to Pigeon Island. A water taxi is $15US per person and I'm sure it'd be really nice, but we took a regular taxi around the bay for $13US for 3 people. There is a $5US ($13.35 EC) fee to enter. It is not recommended to pay for a tour because the island is very tiny.
It really is an island, but a causeway was built to adjoin it to St. Lucia in 1972. There is a small visitor's center with the history of the island and how it was strategically used. There are remnants of a fort on one side and throughout the grounds and on another hill that I couldn't even get to the top of, so be sure to wear good shoes (as the incline to both peaks are quite step). I'd also like to recommend that you go first thing in the morning to avoid the heat, but in August, the heat has already arrived in the early morning hours and the hike may not be any easier. On a clear day, you can look north and see the mountains of Martinique.
They have a water side restaurant near the water taxi dock and it's really good; they have some of the best roti I've ever had, but as with everywhere we seem to eat, they had a menu, but not everything wsa available. I wanted lamb roti, but the chicken roti was fantastic. The other place is near the visitors center and we did not get a chance to visit that one.
There are 2 small beaches that are perfect for he or she who wants to get away from the crowd. Bring your snorkel gear and a towel. You can rent a beach chair after you have hiked around the island and take a few breath-taking pictures from the fort.
When your'e done, you exit the park. To the left, you can see the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the rocks. To the right lies a beach of locals; its soft and easy and relaxing. A short walk down the casueway will lead you to a taxi stand in front of the Sandals resorts and you will be able to grab a cab back to your hotel.
The St. Lucia Jazz festival is also held here; or least it's one of the venues for it.
