Pierogi Fest Whiting Reviews
Hava Pierogi Hava Jul 31, 2011
Pierogi Fest in Whiting brings people seeking the eastern European dumpling from all over the country if not from all over the world. The town of Whiting closes off one of its streets for a few blocks and brings in a ton of food booths, most of which are selling some sort of pierogi, from the traditional sort of potato, potato and cheese, mushroom, etc., to the fruit pierogi, to alligator pierogi (these were all sold out by the time we arrived on the last day of the festival), taco pierogi, and pizza pierogi. There are also stands selling souveniers (mostly Polish items) and the official Pierogi Fest store where you could buy a pierogi hat if you so choose.
There is also a children's area and a beer garden, arts and crafts, and four stages. The main stage featured ethnic dancing, and the day we were there, the pierogi toss and the pierogi eating contest. We went primarily for the entertainment--specifically the Yellow Submorons band which pays tribute to the Rutles (a parady of the Beatles). The website for the festival had the time for this as 12 noon on Sunday. When we got to the festival, we found that their time wasn't at noon, but rather 4-5. So this festival is really, really bad at making sure that people have the proper information before getting there.
