Piedmont is a small community north of Rapid City along the east side of Interstate-90. After more than a century of existence, the town's residents voted to incorporate in the summer of 2007.

The central core of the town is old, with only a handful of turn-of-the-century wooden commercial buildings constructed in typical frontier style. There is a hair salon, two bars, two churches, a gas station, a VFW post and a volunteer fire department. There are no hotels, although there is a popular and long-lived steakhouse on the southern edge of town.

Several new housing developments have popped up around the town within the past five years, indicating that Piedmont may become an important residential area as Rapid City continues to grow.
