Picton Lodge Backpackers Reviews
Ideal for passing travellers Jan 15, 2011
Picton Lodge, located a five-miunte walk from the Picton Ferry Terminal and opposite the Picton i-Site, is a rather small and simple hostel without much extravagance but therefore featured with familiar atmosphere.
Besides the main street with shopping facilities, and loads of cafés, restaurants and bars, and the picturesque waterfront are just a short walking distance away.
The reception is open from 8.30am to about 10.00pm, so if you arrive at a different time you should better inform the hosts.
The check-in is more than uncomplicated and quickly done, not such a thing as ID is needed, only your name is written down. After that procedure one of the attentive hosts brings you to your room (twin/double/family rooms, mixed or female small/medium dorms available) and shows you around the shared and fully equipped kitchen (tea, coffee and sugar are for free), lounge with TV and heaps of info material, and bathroom.
Coin-operated Internet access (NZ$2.00 per 20 minutes), pay/card phones and laundry facilities are also available.
Furthermore you can make free use of the book exchange, and you can also buy some essentials like tinned food or sun screen at the reception.
The rooms are clean and tidy and rather sparsely furnished with (bunk) beds and chairs but it's totally fine for an overnight stay. You have to bring along a sleeping bag or pay a fee for linen and blanket.
Since Picton Lodge is directly located next to some railways you have to cope with a certain amount of rattling noises (at day and night) but those are not so bad that you couldn't sleep. It's simply not as quiet and peaceful as you maybe wished it would be.
The only thing I found slightly disturbing was the fact that you can't lock your own room since you don't get a key. Well, the explanation sounded simple 'As long as the front door is open there's always someone at the reception where everyone has to pass' but actually I went in and out several times without being seen, though.
If you like a cordial, familiar atmosphere, reasonable room rates and an ideal gateway for your travels I can recommend Picton Lodge for a stay.
