On the briny..... Jun 03, 2017
There should be no surprises from the moment you glimpse the exterior of Pickle Bills. If you have ever dined at one of the many Joe’s Crab Shacks, an identical atmosphere immediately strikes you. These suspicions are immediately confirmed once you step inside – the décor is a jammed nautical glut of “ha-ha” displays (i.e., plentiful divers and alligators, etc. in silly poses with silly placards spouting bad puns). Unfortunately, there is complete follow through and your meal will likely be overpriced, deep-fried seafood that is not fresh.

If you enter with that expectation, however, your meal may be salvaged. I took everything in stride, prepared for a cheesy experience which is still a fun time. I limited my seafood selections and opted for a cup of lobster bisque, followed by a Cobb salad. The bisque confirmed high prices for subpar offerings, though I may be biased after living in Maine ten years. My salad was nothing special, but at least they did not skimp on the meat content, so I was content.

What made this a quality experience was the setting. There is plenty of outdoor seating and it was a lovely summer evening. Perched by a charming river with plenty of ducks, geese and boats plying the water, it was very relaxing. My waitress struck me as a college student, and was attentive and competent. I chatted with several other guests and was impressed to learn the establishment had been around a long time, at least thirty years, so not a knock-off of Joe’s Crab Shack – a spontaneous eruption of tacky. I learned it is advised to head upstairs where the main bar lies. I did not venture there, but apparently much less crowded and they usually have live music (I can hear Jimmy Buffet now).

I agree Scot. We moved to Ohio from Maine and I quickly learned that around here, seafood = "perch". My wife and I ate at a sushi place about two weeks after moving here and it was awful --- the thought plaguing my mind throughout the meal was "18 hours on a warm truck".....

You lost me at Jimmy Buffett. hahaha. I think I'm in the same boat with you, Vance. I'm a little spoiled from living in Florida. I've had good seafood. Even Joe's Crab Shack has better seafood than what I've found in Ohio over the years. I tell my parents that every time I come to see them I lose ten pounds from not eating. I haven't spent any notable time in Cleveland in recent years but the last time I did, I will say that it was leaps and bounds above the rest of the places I've been to there. I blame it on the Amish influence. Amish food is beyond bland to me - it's cardboard.
