Picante Berkeley Reviews
Feb 12, 2006
I finally got a chance to eat at Picante this Wednesday with some
people from work. Picante is a fun place to go-- it's very spacious,
brightly decorated, and the staff seems friendly. I'd been told before
going that Picante has got the best Mexican food in Berkeley. After
eating there, I agree that the Mexican food is good, but it wasn't the
best Mexican food I've ever had.
is located on 6th Street in Berkeley. Their burritos are huge; most
people probably won't be able to finish it. I got some tamales with
pork. They were warm and fresh, served with rice and refried beans and
a dipping sauce. The corn meal was 100% handmade, as was everything
else about the tamale. But I was a little disappointed with them. They
just weren't that flavorful. They tasted better when I ate them with
the sauce. In fact, I thought my rice tasted better than my tamales.
friend Jenny got a bowl of Picante's famous soup-- I had a few sips and
I would recommend this, especially on a cold and wet day. They also
serve many different types of agua fresca (over 12) and the variety is
refreshing. I like the menu because they offer so many choices-- they
even have a separate vegetarian menu and kid's menu. It looks like they
make all their food from scratch, including their tortillas.
want to give Picante a 4 because it's such a fun, friendly, and
authentic place, but unfortunately the food just wasn't tasty enough to
merit an exceptional rating. It's still worth your time, though.
