A large square. Feb 13, 2017
This is the main square in Trieste. It is surrounded by several palaces built mostly in the 19th century. Here you can see the Town Hall; built in 1875. The Government Palace (1904-1905); with mosaics and a loggia. Palazzo Stratti with the historical cafe named Caffe degli Specchi.

Opposite the Town Hall there is a huge fountain; the Fountain of the Four Continents. It was built between 1751-1754. Here are represented four continents, because the fifth; Australia wasn' t discovered at that time yet.

Piazza dell' Unità d' Italia is very large and opens to the sea. This is one of the places in Trieste where various performances are held.
Close up of the fountain.

Stunning square Apr 01, 2011
This piazza is definitely the grandest in Trieste, and perhaps one of the nicer ones in the region (Udine has a great looking piazza nearby, but still, this piazza is pretty pretty). The piazza was modelled during the time of Mussolini, who felt that the square needed to be suitably embellished with wonderful public buildings. The square is rather wide, open and perfect for events and gatherings that get laid on here. Right in front of you, you are faced with wonderful panoramic views of the Adriatic sea, where it is possible to admire the blue shades, crisp air and the odd boat that strays along. All in all, a lovely square to visit if you are in Trieste!
