Piazza Santo Stefano is often overlooked in Bologna and overshadowed by the main square or Piazza Maggiore. Whilst the tourists may flock to the latter, Santo Stefano retains an energetic vibe as the evening progresses. It is the meeting point of many Bolognese students and the starting point of many evenings on the town. The cobbled streets lead up to the Santo Stefano church that dominates the piazza. It is a unique sight to see people drinking the night away outside such a religious monument. This is Bologna!

The square is lined by the portici that act as a shelter on rainy summer nights. Underneath these walkways you can find a host of cafes and bars, however most people just congregate in various groups and sit on the ground. You can drink some wine and listen to the singing and the guitar playing in a really chilled out environment.
