Pia Poppies Hotel & Restaurant Tana Toraja Reviews
Peaceful and simple accomodation in Tana Toraja Dec 29, 2010
We stayed for two nights in Tana Toraja at a small hotel called Pia Poppies (62 – 0423-21121), it was located at Karasik, a little farther outside the town center of Rantepao.
Pia Poppies was a family owned hotel and they had divided the work load among the family members. It was seems that only the father (Pak Yes) who could do the reservation; therefore we needed to make several phone calls in order for us to speak to Pak Yes who then was able to confirm our reservation.
Our bus ride from Makassar arrived in the early morning, and luckily our room was ready. The room rate was IDR 154,000/ night (double room, hot water, excluding breakfast, no AC – you don’t need AC when you stay in Tana Toraja anyway).
The concept of the hotel was stony decorated, earthy and green. The room’s wall, bathroom and table were made out of stone and outside of the room was a rice paddy field. Definitely, in the morning we could smell nothing other than the fresh air and hear the rooster crowing. It was peaceful – literally.
One downside that needs anticipation is a little dusty room caused by the stony walls/tables, those who are sensitive to dust, may suffer a bit.
Note though, meals preparation in Pia Poppies takes quite a long time. It was better to pre-order your breakfast from the day before / dinner at least two hours prior your dinner time.
The location is not on the town center of Rantepau, however, public transportation (becak) will get you easily (IDR 5000 – IDR 10,000) to the city center.
Overall, it was a pleasant and comfortable experience staying at Pia Poppies and we would recommend other travelers to stay there.

Rocky furniture in Pia Poppies Dec 22, 2008
Actually this hotel already reviewed in Lonely Planet Asia edition.
And from my point of view, this hotel was all I need for a cozy, comfort, friendly host, and affordable.
I was very surprised by the hospitality of this hotel's owner. An elderly couple who likes to talk about everything, always greets you if you come home after a tiring journey, they were like my grandparents! They have plenty of love to give...and I feel very welcome. Helping by their sons and daughters, this hotel is their home also.
About the interior, they were made from rocks. The bench, table, wall, even the bathtub...they all made from rocks!
From Pia Poppies, you just a second walk to the main street. From there you could use public transportation to get here and there in Tana Toraja
