Sunset views Mar 23, 2010
Phnom Bakheng was constructed towards the end of the ninth century under the reign of Yasovarman. This was built in the shape of a “temple mountain”, which means lots of vertical steps to climb up. Having said that, it really is one of the best places to see the sunset and as it’s so large, it can accommodate a very healthy amount of visitors after Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom of course. The temple is dedicated to Shiva and for some reason, it is policed by officials (or at least it was at the time of my visit). Apart from the views, I didn’t think there was much to this temple. The carvings were not that spectacular. Despite this, it’s a great architectural feat and makes a fantastic finishing point at the end of the day. Worth going for this reason alone.
