So we closed last night.  I guess that means this is the last entry in this particular journal.  To the cast of Dog Sees God, not that any of you will read this, you were amazing, thank you, and I hope to see and work with you all again, soon. Until the next journal, nothin' but love for ya, Ken

Eastern State Pen. I don't even know where to begin. There are no words to describe all the feelings of walking through this prison. It was scary, sad, heartbreaking, tortured, crazy, lonely, old, and unlike anything I've ever seen before. This prison even had running water before the white house! Designed by John Haviland and opened in 1829, Eastern State is considered to be the world's first true penitentiary. Its revolutionary system of incarceration, dubbed the Pennsylvani...

This is the place where the quest for liberty, and freedom from the opressor, took its roots.Though the first settlers in this city, who arrived in the 1600s, were dutch and german immigrants escaping religious persecution, it was not until the late 1700s that the true history of the United States began. It was during the time of the Revolutionary War, and people were fighting the British Monarchy, King George's Armies, for freedom and independance. It was in this city where The Declaration of...

Philly - Day One
posted by:

I had waited for this day since 1979  when I missed the original exhibit in Seattle …King Tutankhamun at the Franklin Institute. I ditched the wheelchair since we knew they would have electric carts…yes, folks, electric chairs!!! For some reason Kj wasn’t very excited about my new-found freedom. She didn’t have to push me around, which I thought was great for her. However, about 60 seconds into driving the electric cart, Kj was ready to take it away and put me back in something s...

King Tut in Philly
posted by:
Jul 21, 2007 - Jul 22, 2007
I found out several months ago that artifacts from King Tut's tomb were on display in Philadelphia which on a good day is only a 3-hour drive.  I knew that once summer rolled around, visiting the Franklin Institute would become a top priority. A little over a month after school let out, I finally made the arrangements to meet up with Lin and tour the exhibit.  Our only worry was the fact that we had been unable to buy tickets on-line since we hadn't known if we were going on Saturd...

Drove in to Center City Phila.  We stayed at the Omni in Center City.   I was amazed as to how clean everything was and how safe I felt the entire time no matter what time of day or night it was.  It has dramatically changed since the 80's and 90's.  We had our first night introductory dinner to talk about what our agenda was for the week.  This time there were not that many of us participants, but nonetheless, we did a lot of sight seeing along with the fitness ...

The Frida Kahlo Exhibit in the Philadelphia Museum of Art
posted by:
Apr 19, 2008
Today my father, sister, close friend, her mother and I visited the Frida Kahlo Exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This, honestly, was the first time I had ever been to the PMA and boy was it worth it. Having watched the biography of Kahlo's life, skillfully played by the brilliant Salma Hayek, I became intrigued by the work of the famous Mexican Artist. Needless to say, the exhibit was anything but disappointing. I sometimes found myself in disbelief that I was actually standing in f...

So we woke up and went down to go get some food in philly.  We walked down the road and saw a street vendor...I suggested that.  But for some reason people don't trust them....let me just tell you that street vendor food is awesome and if you ever see them you should stop there if you're hungry!!  We walked past whole foods market... I suggested it, but I got denied.  Then we went past another street vendor; nope not eating their either.  We finally came across a rest...

Cassie and I both have the same mutual friend that lives in Philly, so it was the perfect place to stay for the night. For free mind you! I love all of the history that Philadelphia has to offer, but I don't care much for the city itself. I don't really have any reasoning for this, but it's the way I feel. We definitely did some cool stuff while we were there. We toured the Betsy Ross House, that was pretty cool, Betsy was a hustler man, she did everything she could to make money to liv...

connecting in Philadelphia en route to Tampa

My flight had departed for PA a little behind schedule, but landed a few minutes early.  I reached gate F2 before 6-30pm, but the board showed my 7:00pm flight as delayed until 8:24pm.  The US Airways agent at the podium said I would arrive at 9:40 and I hurriedly checked my bus schedule.  The last GF of the night would pass Tweed a mere two minutes after my landing!  I expressed my frustration, but remained optimistic that the flight might land early and the bus would run...

Norfolk, VA to Marlton, NJ / Philadelphia, PA., Eastern State Penitentiary

When I left Norfolk, I took the Chesapeake Bridge and Tunnel which connects you to the northern part of Virginia, on through Maryland, Delaware and into New Jersey. Four states in one day. can't do that in the west! Parked at a little Elks Lodge in Marlton, NJ which is only 20 miles east of Philadelphia. The lodge was a small home and only open on weekends. A guy was mowing the lawn and helped me locate where to park. My first day in Philadelphia involved a walk all around the Liberty B...
