Great Sacred Stupa Dec 16, 2013
There is a cost to get in to see the reclining buddha statue, but I don't remember the reason why we didn't do this. Although from reading some review it might not have been worth it. So what we did was stayed on the outside which you can still see the stupa. Also there is a statue of someone but I don't know who. I have provided a picture. There is a nice building to the left as you walk toward the stupa. I do remember buying coconut ice cream and that was very good. There are also some vendors who sell small birds that you can purchase and set them free as you are at the statue.
Statue of a former king.

Golden Stupa Jun 07, 2013
Pha That Luang is a golden stupa and national symbol of Laos. There are few interesting things to see in vicinity of the Golden stupa and they are actually more interesting and free (for example, laying golden Buddha and very nicely painted Vat). Golden stupa is really golden and it is surrounded with the fortress like wall and lifted on the pedestal. Entrance fee is cheap and you can get in on two entrances. Next to the walls is covered walkway which you can follow if outside is raining or if sun is too strong. Some remanences of the old figurines are presented in the parts of the walkway. Four stairs lead to the stupa, but gates are locked and you can’t enter the stupas terrace. It is surreal how much gold they put on this construction when most of the country is extremely poor.

Great Stupa: Nat'l symbol of Laos Sep 30, 2009
I am a bit surprised that more people have not reviewed this site, as I found it quite grand and photogenic.

The surrounding park has been fenced off, so getting to the gate is quite a walk. But once inside, there are many interesting buildings. I went alone, so I have no idea of the history or significance, but I took plenty of pictures! ;-)
