Pewee's Restaurant & Bar Negril Reviews
Nov 07, 2007
Pewee's Restaurant & Bar in Negril's West End on the cliffs is a hidden jewel tucked off the road enough where if you blink, you may miss it. We were introduced to Pewee's when our friend Danny led us to the place the morning we were looking for a breakfast spot. As we passed the kitchen we saw the cooks busily preparing food and continued on to the open-air dining area that overlooks the cliffs with a spectacular view of the ocean. There was a table of fellow tourists awaiting their breakfast. The small menu on the wall near the kitchen indicated offerings such as omelets, french toast and other continental fare all for very inexpensive prices in JA dollars. We placed a special order with the help of Danny, the son of the woman in the kitchen named Winsome, and soon he was off to procure us the necessary ingredients for saltfish & ackee. A choice of coffee or juice was offered as we waited and soon we saw our dining neighbors receive their plates of food which must've been good since the table went silent and they seemed to devour it in no time flat. Finally, our special order was ready and throughout our trip, Danny's saltfish & ackee rivaled the best. We found out soon after that his chosen occupation is as a chef. However, for a small bribe you can also probably get him to jump off the cliff and plummet the approximately 25 feet or so to the water below (that is, if you're looking for that kind of entertainment)!
Pewee's has a great tiki-style bar just outside of the patio dining area and I've been told that it's quite the happening spot during 'high season' and it looks like it definitely could be. Though we only went at breakfast, Pewee's offers lunch and dinner options as well and I've read good (though sparse) reviews about the food. There is much history behind this little place that I look forward to learning more about but if you get a chance to go there, ask and find out the colorful history. Every year they have a birthday party for Pewee who passed away some time ago but apparently the event is the talk of the town!
One more thing about Pewee's is that the sign indicates there are rooms for rent so if you are a budget traveler, this may be a good place to inquire about. Stop in and check availability and stay on the cliffs for cheap if you're looking on-the-fly.
If you find yourself up on the cliffs near the Blue Cave Castle, make your way to Pewee's and check out the incredible seaviews from the patio while enjoying home-cooked food made with love!
