Karlsruhe's Youngest Church Sep 18, 2017
Karlsruhe's youngest church is one day old while I am writing this - it has been inaugurated only yesterday. In times of diminuishing numbers of church members and thus diminuishing church tax, a newly built church has become a rarity. For people who are intrerested in contemporary architecture it may thus be of interest.

Located in Nordweststadt, Karlsruhe's northwestern suburb, the new building substitutes two previous churches, both from the 1960s. The two parishes and communities have fusioned in recent years. Both have been torn down. Only the steeple of one of them, an open steel construction, is still standing. The bells stay up there until the new church will, some day, have its own bell tower.

The new church has been designed by the architect Peter Krebs. Construction works have started in 2015. The building complex unites church and community centre, connected by an atrium in the middle from where the entrance doors lead into the church, the main hall and to the staircase up into the community centre. The shapes are simple and geometric, but not without surprises. Windows open the view into two small side courtyards with plants, and up into the sky. Everything is painted in white. Colourful stained glass windows from both former churches have been integrated into the new building.

On Sunday, September 17, 2017 the church has been inaugurated with a festive service, celebrations and concerts. As usual on building sites, not everything is 100% finished yet. But from now on the parish community will celebrate their services and meet for their activities in the new church and centre.
