I visited Madrid a few months ago in March (3-16 to 3-20) and loved the hotel we stayed in. It was in a VERY central location - right in the middle by puerta de sol. Rates were decent for the two of us. It was 80 euro per night for 2 people, including breakfast.
Service at the front desk depended on who was working ;P One lady was extremely helpful and offered to help us book train tickets to Barcelona. We took her up on her offer and asked service desk for ticket help, but unfortunately it was someone else working and she told us to "do it ourselves with the computers upstairs". We went upstairs to book the tickets, but the website was in spanish. Eventually we went back down to ask her for translation. I think she felt bad and told us she'd book it for us at her computer :) Room service was good. They cleaned up the room well everyday, replenshing soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc. when needed. The rooms themselves were fairly modern/contemporary. Beds tended to be mediocre, but I'm not complaining since the room was fairly cheap. Noise factor. For most nights we got pretty decent sleep considering we had a balcony and the hotel is located on a busy pedestrian street/shopping area. You will encounter some noise issues if you have noisy neighbors yelling in the hallways and coming back drunk >:| Transportation. The main reason why we picked this place is because of the location and the decency of the room/breakfast (all reviews I read about this place before coming mentioned how great breakfast is). It was in the middle of madrid. You can decide to walk to the major tourist sites if you wanted to without taking the metro. And if you wanted to take the metro, it's only a two minute walk away. Overall, I think this place is great for the money. hopefully it's still available if you want to book it. Hope this helped! I'm not much of a backpacker so I can't provide much in that area...
