So apparently many of my ancestors lived around this area, which is why we are here.  Mum has been before & just couldn't wait to come back.  We are staying with some family friends, who are completely lovely & lots of fun - it's interesting trying to understand them as a) they have quite thick Scottish accents, and b) they often slip into a local dialect, which of course we don’t understand at all, although we have been learning… "Fit like?""Nae bad."(Translation: How ...

Slains Castle inspired Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula. It was built in 1597 by the 9th Earl of Erroll after his return to Scotland from exile, being pardoned by James VI for his rebellion. It was remodelled to a gothic style in the 19th century.
