I spent 3 nights in a fantastic hostel called Miraflores House, run by a jovial man called Francis. Despite my initial misgivings about Lima (it´s a big city of some several million people, many who are poor, and there are areas where you really shouldn´t go), I had no troubles there at all. Let´s hope this continues through the rest of my trip! The taxi drivers are willing to talk and not many people speak English so it was a good (but hard) way to get right into my Spanish. Miraflores is...

I have been excited the whole week about the idea of finally start travelling this 2008. Sure, it would be because of business, but also I would be able to enjoy and have fun in the States. My final destination was New Orleans, but could find the way to go to Austin - spend one night there - and spend one day in Houston. In both places I met really nice people.
Anyway, the adventure started in Lima. I arrived to the airport, was doing the line at security and the girl told me there was a li...

Its been a while since I've written, so if this gets long or boring just lie to me and tell me you read it. I'd never know the difference. Actually, I have a feeling that's what's happening at restaurants and on some of the tours we've done. Who really knows. Ignorance truly is bliss...So the last time I had written my mom and I were on the train on our way from machu pichu back to cusco where we spent another 2 nights. Like I said in the last email, cusco is a beautiful city but next t...

Not a very exciting day, just driving through to Lima and finding our way to the bus. The road is pretty good – this is the same Panamerican highway that we were on in Puerto Varas in Chile.
The way through Lima was surprisingly painless. We followed the signs through an industrial, port area and arrived safely at the airport. The only bit of entertainment was actually when we got stopped by a policeman. I had just overtaken a string of trucks and got pulled over by one of the cop...

We got to Lima, Peru two days earlier than expected. We were originally intending to fly into Lima on the 1st May, however between the 1st being a public holiday and us needed some extra time to get to cuzco we decided to shift the flight forward to the 29th April.
We´d been reading the lonely planet about Lima, which does not give it a good wrap at all and you pretty much come away from reading it with the feeling that if you get out of there without being robbed and both your kidneys, yo...

Friday 22 Feb, 2008What a crazy day today was! Ha! Last night we were told flights to Cuzco are canceled. Then they give us a new flight to Cuzco. Then this morning they cancel again! We try to figure out what to do and the websites don't work and Chris was getting very frustrated being the only person who can speak Spanish. Gloria and I both felt bad because we couldn't be more helpful. Claudia came back to our hostel because Chris had left his light meter in her car. She is very kind and he...

The storied capital of the Incan Empire and gateway to the imperial city of Machu Picchu, Cusco(also spelled as Cuzco) is one of the undisputed highlights of South America. Stately and historic, with stone streets and building foundation laid by the Incas more than 5 centuries ago, the town is much more than a mere history lesson, it is also surprisingly dynamic, enlivened by throngs of travelers who have transformed the historic center around the Plaza de Armas into mecca of sorts for South ...

Just like Los Angeles, only less skyscrapers, and more beautiful! There was a bit of smog and grafitti, but I'm guessing that can be found in any major city. My parents thought the grafitti was a shame, but I thought the grafitti was very artistic...funny, no?There are many, many cathedrals to be seen in the city, and just about as many KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken - fast food chain I had thought only existed in America) restaurants also. A nice place, but Lima itself isn't worth a trip. (Mach...

I left Sunday in the wee hours of the morning. My daughter Sarah dropped me off. One of the perks of having a teen daughter. She can finally chauffer me around for once. Sarah walked with me into the airport and I had a vague guilty feeling since this is the first time I have traveled while Sarah is home and not visiting her dad in Florida. When she dropped me off at the airport she stood and watched me go through security looking all sad and dejected. I miss her already.
But the good news ...

We arrived in Lima around 11:00 PM and since we had just brought backpacks as carry-on we wasted no time and exchanged some money in the airport so we could pay the taxi-found the taxies recommend by GAP and took off to our hotel where we were to meet the rest of our group.
Got to the small but very nice hotel in the Miraflores section of Lima in about 45 min. If had not been a set fee for the taxi I would have thought our driver (who was very nice and spoke English) was driving...

What a pain in the butt!! For the first time ever, crossing the border was hell! We finally got to the border town on the Ecuadorian side, when we were told that its immigration office was located on the other side of town! Luckily we got picked up by a couple who kindly enough dropped us off there to get our passports stamped for exit.
Then we had to head back to where we were, only to learn that the Peruvian immigration office is another 3 kms away! And of course, everyone was trying to g...
