This was Francois’ 2nd day in Peru. The night before we agreed to meet for lunch. I picked him up at Rom’s at 1:15pm in my new car, haha. I have driven some TB’s before, but never with this car. Francois is the 1st one :) So, this drive was even more special, hehe. Although is winter time in Lima, these past few days have been sunny and this wasn’t an exception. Ok, what do we like to eat when is sunny??? Cebiche!!! So, let’s go for some fish & seafood. I remembered he mad...

coming back from the internet cafe i met 4 other people from the group and thank god the first impression was great! we spent the afternoon strolling around miraflores, do some minor shopping (love my new belt hehe) and finished with a visit to el parco amor (sp?) a great little park on the coast with a view over the beaches and a very naughty statue on top of it. it's like the local kissing place but unfortunately there was no single corner and i couldnt convince the two australian gi...

We are exhausted from a two day tour to the Colca Canyon and back, having seen many llamas, alpacas, handicrafts and other tourists.  We also witnessed the beauty that is a condor soaring high above this morning after a 5 a.m. wake up call.  But first… I got robbed!!    Yes, after a year long on the road without having lost or had anything stolen, I fell victim to a distract and grab scheme here in Arequipa.  Our first day here, we set out to stroll the streets a...

across the border
posted by:

I grabbed my bags, said goodbye to Olav and jumped in the cab. Five minutes later I was at the border. As with most countries in South America there is a bit of no-man's land at the border, where no local traffic is allowed, so I had to get out and walk across the border myself. First I had to get an exit stamp from Bolivian emigration. Once again I had to explain how I'd gotten out of La Paz this morning and the customs officer was amused by my tales. He assured me I was definitely the only ...

I went to Iquitos in order to attend to a business course. Anyway, I could spend a free Sunday just before going back home. My flight was scheduled at 9am, but a friend who lives there offered to show me around Iquitos. He asked me, what are you gonna do in Lima? Mmm, he was right. I had no plans. So I decided to stay and enjoy a nice day. We didn´t have much time, but tried to do our best. Iquitos is a very warm city, well it´s in the rainforest. We visited Quistococha a park with a beaut...

Some random impressions and thoughts about Lima gathered in my first 3 weeks here:CLIMATE:It never rains in Lima.  At most there is a fine mist that comes down for hours in the late evening or night and eventually accumulates a bit on the ground.  Most of the greenery either survives well in a dry climate or is artificially watered.  There is a large water truck that comes by in each municipality (in the richer areas) and workers standing up in back spray water from a large hos...

Finally we arrived to Lima around 2am! Was the flight so short? Not at all. Buenos Aires is two hours ahead of Lima, so actually we arrived at 4am, that’s why I was feeling tired. Anyway a good thing of a delayed flight is the fact you arrive to the airport while nobody is arriving, haha. So, it’s pretty easy to go through customs. It took a bit long until our bags came out, but it wasn’t too bad. Before leaving Buenos Aires, I was able to arrange the taxi and a cab was waiting fo...

Arrival in Peru
posted by:

Early in the morning we jumped in the car and headed out towards 'Asia' a group of private beaches eighty to ninety km from Lima. The concept of the private beach in Peru had become quite controversial in recent years.  Apparently the primarily white, wealthy property owners of 'Asia' had made it against the rules for the mainly native Peruvian house maids to go swimming during certain hours of the day and this eventually erupted into a scandal.  High-profile actors joined the figh...

Personally, I prefer to discover a city just by my own.  I mean, I don't like going with a guided tour. But this time was different. My boss came to Lima during Easter and before being able to travel to our destinations in South America, we had to spend some free time in Lima. He has been here several times, but never could know the city, always was running from one place to another. Anyway, he wanted to take a tour and I chose this one, because I wasn't at the Parque de la Reserva befo...

I couldn’t believe it, I was back home!!! I was able to communicate to my mom while I was in Miami, so she sent a taxi to pick me up from the airport. Doing customs wasn’t bad, since I left the plain early, but picking up the bags took a long time!!! Actually the longest was getting out of the baggage claim area. In Lima you have to press a button in order to know if they are gonna check your bags or not. Anyway, 2 flights from Miami arrived at same time and both of them were full, ...

Very cultural day today!  We took a taxi to the Museo Rafael Larco, a private museum with an outstanding collection of Peruvian antiquities - lots of gold pieces and a massive collection of ceramics from the various Peruvian cultures.  This museum also has good English explanations in the main collection, although none in the temporary exhibition.  The most unusual section here is the erotic collection - two rooms of rather explicit depictions of the sexual practices of the anc...
