Comfort and convience near Karl Johans Gate Feb 19, 2015
I stayed here for a few nights while in Oslo. It's known for the military staying there while stationed in Oslo.

Great location. A short 2 minute walk from Oslo's most popular street, Karl Johans Gate where there is plenty of food, shopping, and bars. This isn't a party hostel/hotel. This is a more relaxing place to sleep at night.

Free breakfast and good wifi. The bathrooms are in each dorm room, so it was clean. My photos are spotty *sorry* but know that if you stay here it won't be a mistake.

The closet, once for each bed.
Clean bathroom
Clean shower, plenty of hot water

Squeaky clean hostel but not social at all Mar 26, 2012
This is a difficult review for me to write, because Perminalen is actually one of the best hostels I've stayed at in terms of amenities, cleanliness, staff helpfulness, and relative location.

The problem is that when I went to Perminalen in late July it was empty. Kind of like that movie 'the Shining.' More people trickled in later, but the place was dead and the tiny 'common room' had no more than 2 people in at any given time. I only saw 2 other people that could have been backpackers. The rest were teachers visiting the university or various businessmen.

I think this problem could be inherent to Oslo: the city is pretty and pleasant but a far cry from Stockholm or Copenhagen in terms of things to do. The books aren't kidding when they say spend a day or two maximum here. Oh, and did I mention that it's EXPENSIVE? Not exactly a beacon for backpackers.

The alternatives are few. A buddy of mine stayed at Anker hostel and said it was unfriendly and not well maintained. Another hostel lies way outside of the city center.

My opinion is that Oslo should be a launch point to Bergen and the western fjords. Norway's main attraction is it's natural beauty. Perminalen is a great place to rest and explore Oslo for a day. Just don't expect much of a social atmosphere here and quickly move on to the fjords.

Affordable and good hotel in Oslo Oct 12, 2012
This place isn't a hostel but a real hotel that has a number of 4 bed dorms (not mixed). I thought it was very good value to stay in Oslo, which is one of the most expensive cities in Europe and possibly the world too.

The location just off Karl Johan was perfect, only a 10' walk from the main train station and literaly right in the center of Oslo.

It had the services a hotel offers, with a huge buffet breakfast included in the price... Very nice, they even provided little plastic bags so you could make your lunch too if you wanted.

24h reception with friendly and helpful staff. Only low point was there was no guest computer, they had wifi but the use of the hotel computer was not free.

As for the room/ dorm it was quite spacious, very clean, had a tv, some shelves, table and chairs. Just no lockers which felt a bit weird but it was fine. The bathroom was big and very clean. Staff came every day to clean the room and bathroom.

There was a common room/ tv room on the ground floor. It wasn't the typical hostel common room (after all it's not a hostel) but I did manage to meet some people there. Also very quiet at night so perfect for some good sleep :)

Bed sheets were included in the price but towels had to be rented for some extra money.

Can't count on things to go smoothly Mar 18, 2011
When I was there things went ok, but then a month later my husband went there and even though he booked a room in advance, the hotel was overbooked and had no room for him.

In a normal hotel he would have been offered alternative accommodation, but obviously this is some hotel/hostel hybrid, very cheap for an Oslo hotel, yet pricey for a hostel. If you catch it on a good day, you'll get your money worth. Just think carefully if you wanna take that chance and maybe find yourself on the street. And I wouldn't wanna spend a night exploring the streets of Oslo...

If you do catch it on a good day, you'll get a basic room with decent beds and a decent shower, fairly clean.

One good surprise was the breakfast, which was just as good as in more expansive Norwegian hotels and even better than some of them. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty basic, but for that price it's more than enough.

You could say it was a hotel... Feb 14, 2011
...but then I would be lying.

These people had overbooked our room, which meant they shoved the three of us into one of their small conference rooms for one night. One of us got so fed up he left for home at midnight.

We were given curtains to put up, and to do this we were also given a hammer and a couple of nails.

The breakfast was bland, dry and nothing special either.

Good value Nov 07, 2010
Next time I visit Oslo will definitly stay here. The staff were very professional and kind. The room was very clean. And location was perfect:near the port n 5 min from the main street. Also in comparising with other hostal where you share room, here you dont have to pay extras, bed clothes n breakfast were include.
