Take stomach medicine with you, and plenty of it! Don't eat anything that also appears in flower arrangements. Try as hard as you can to only drink bottled water (take a water bottle), and if someone offers you Chairman Mao's favorite dish (which is cubed pork fat) it may never exit your body. It's really hot and humid in the summer time, so it may be worth it to pack necessities which would be difficult to find in China (like a good pair of shoes and rain coat) and bring extra money to purchase clothes while you're there. I ended up buying cheap dresses and shirts when I went because even my lightest clothing was too hot. Don't take an umbrella, you can get one there. Flip flops are an excellent choice of footwear because your feet will be filthy no matter what so you might as well not ruin a pair of shoes you like and it won't matter if your flip flops get wet. Don't bother bringing hair products. If you walk down any sidestreets you'll probably find migrants; they make excellent food (like bean soup and steamed dumplings) and you can get a few for 10 cents.
