It´s all gingerbread cookies! Dec 08, 2010
Pepperkakebyen, or the Gingerbread City in English, has been a tradition in Bergen since 1991. For the first 17 years the Gingerbread City was a rather small exhibition in a room on the top floor of the Galeriet shopping mall. In the beginning schools and kinder gardens contributed in making a miniature version of Bergen – all in gingerbread cookies!
It has grown in popularity and size and three years ago it was moved to a large tent in Torgallmeningen, in the heart of Bergen. Now, companies and graduate schools are also contributing. There are houses, schools, churches, a Mary go round, a football field, a couple of oilrigs, ferries, ships and much much more – all made of gingerbread cookies. The income from the exhibition goes to the making of the Gingerbread city, to support humanitarian efforts for children, and to work for a lively, pleasant, safe, tolerant and attractive Bergen.
The Gingerbread City is a big deal in Bergen, specially if you have children. When I went the line wasn´t too long and I only waited for 15 minutes. Very good since it was so cold. When you enter the tent you go through a small shop/ticket office where you can buy different shaped gingerbread cookies in addition to your ticket.
The exhibit is open from 26th November until the 31st December. When it´s over, the gingerbread houses are auctioned off. This is done by a real estate agency and is no joke. The houses are advertised together with real houses and apartments in the real estate section in the local newspaper.
The Gigerbread City is worth a visit if you have children.
