Historic Countryside Walkers Retreat Jul 04, 2011
The PEN-Y-GWRYD hotel ( pronounced PENNY GRID ) is situated in the Snowdonia national park amongst the highest peaks in Wales and a 15 minute walk to start of the track to the tallest mountain in wales , Mt Snowdon. This Hotel would have been an interesting destination but the reason it is so amazing is that this was the hotel that the Expedition team of Sir Edmund Hilary stayed in whilst training in Snowdonia before the first successful summit attempt on Everest in 1953. The Hotel itself is a museum as it has a grand collection of pictures , autographs and equipment from the Expedition and has been visited by both Sherpa Tenzing and Sir Edmund Hilary in recent years. To stay in the hotel is a joy to sample the quaint historical welsh romance and hospitality that it has to offer. The Lounge is like a lounge that your gran would have with knitted seat covers and board games to play, it is also a joy that there is no mobile phone signal , no wi-fi and no television, it is pure peace and relaxing. The rooms are all decked in original wooden bedding with Victorian furnishings. The rooms also come with a unique feature of not having locks as it is that relaxed and comfortable its like being at home. The bathrooms which are shared are all in a Victorian style and do have locks ( some places need them ) have huge bronze baths or Victorian showers that are over 100 years old and still working. Staying here is like living in a museum as well as visiting one. When the Bell rings, and it does at set times it is either breakfast or Supper and food is served then only and it is worth going for it as it all local produce and home cooked. After a walk in the valleys and a lovely home cooked dinner you can then enjoy a sauna complete with the hotels own plunge pool / lake before retiring with a whiskey and one of the most peaceful sleeps you will ever have before the bong of the bell for breakfast to arise you for another brisk day in the beautiful welsh countryside.
