Pembroke Castle Reviews
A very historic castle, plus it's got free WiFi! Sep 08, 2015
I'm writing this review on a cold November night sat in Seattle, nearly 3 months since I visited but I still get a smile thinking of my visit. It's the perfect mix of history, technology and enough fun for a full day out for families!
Pembroke Castle was the original seat of the Earldom of Pembroke and through the years has established itself as one of the most powerful castles in the UK. But it's most famous for being the birthplace of Henry VII of England, as in...yes, Tudor Henry!
The Wikipedia page has some really good written history (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pembroke_Castle) if you need to learn more.
So, as for my visit - it was easy spotting the Castle - it's down the High Street and easy to spot as you walk out of the railway station. There were some fancy public benches outside the castle. Paid my entrance fees and walked in - I was quite hungry (and a bit under the weather) so I headed first to the canteen where I had some toasted tea cakes, and took my cold meds. After that, walked around the very chilly Keep and Ward. It was a sunny but incredibly chilly and windy day. But it was fun seeing so many families out and about - I like how this Castle caters to kids and folks wanting to learn about Welsh culture.
I enjoyed attending some of the interactive exhibits but I have to admit, I almost missed that Henry VII exhibit (my cold was messing my attentiveness) but as I was walking out and reading the history, the significance struck me so I rushed back for a snap. I spent the rest of the hour whiling away my time (checking on wifi) and headed back around 4pm for a walk around the moat, and then to the station in time for my train back to Cardiff.
I would highly recommend this Castle - it's great for the history lover, the "Kodak moment" tourist and the family looking for a great day out.
