Pedernales State Park Johnson City Reviews
Apr 13, 2007
Last fall my wife and I escaped for a rare day hike of the Wolf Mountain Trail in Pedernales Falls State Park. We were both enthused by a description which went something like “popular hiking trail leading to Pedernales River that skirts Wolf and Tobacco mountains with several creek crossings . Boulder strewn gorge and Twin Falls viewed from overlook. Moderately difficult.”
Pedernales State Park is just outside of Johnson City, TX (a bit west of Austin for basic reference - Texas is a big damn state) and although you follow a twisty road to your final destination, it is easy to find. Upon arrival we paid the $5 a head entrance fee and headed for the spacious parking lot at the Wolf Mountain trailhead. The trail is actually a road for a stretch, and in fact you never see any trail blazes…because none are necessary.
Although it was good to stretch our legs, the trail was hardly a challenge (we were mystified how this could be categorized as ‘moderately difficult’). More disappointing, there really aren’t many good views – for the most part you are shrouded by a landscape of shrub brush with no expansive vistas…explaining why I don’t have any cool pictures to include! The falls and any creek crossings were cancelled by virtue of it being very dry, so perhaps things improve at other times of the year. Don’t want to dissuade anyone from making this jaunt, because it was a pleasant hike – but it didn’t earn a “destination” status with either of us.
